Remembering Walt & Lillian's Anniversary by Diane Disney Miller

My parents were married on July 13, 1925. It seems that all—or nearly all—of mother's large family were present at the wedding in Lewiston, Idaho. Her sister Hazel and her daughter Marjorie, along with mother, went up from Los Angeles.  My father's family did not make the journey, for financial reasons, and I think that Roy and Edna (who had been married in April of that year) were not there for similar reasons.

Dad always honored this date with flowers. On their 25th anniversary, Sharon and I wanted to get them a special gift, and a good girlfriend of mine took us to a shop in Westwood Village that specialized in silver, crystal, and the like. We knew very little about this sort of thing, but I recall that both of us really wanted to do it. I would have been 16 1/2, she 13 1/2.

On one occasion, maybe 1960, Ron and I and my sister and her husband, Bob Brown, gave them an anniversary dinner in the wine cellar of the restaurant Scandia on the Sunset Strip. We invited three couples that we considered to be their "best friends" at that time:  the architect Welton Becket and his wife Faye, the actor/US Senator George Murphy and his wife, Julie, and Jack and Peggy Bolton. Jack was an agent at MCA. They were really people that we felt comfortable with, too, and the wine cellar did not accommodate a larger group.

The only party that they ever gave to celebrate their anniversary…that I know of…was the wonderful event before the opening on Disneyland in July of 1955.

Anniversary Video Contest: Winners!

Walt Disney said it best: "I can never stand still. I must explore and experiment." And while it's true that Walt was pushing the envelope long before YouTube, we thought it would be fun to celebrate our inaugural year with a FIRST ANNIVERSARY VIDEO CONTEST! So we asked you to pick up your cameras and get the creative juices flowing to create a one-of-a-kind promotional video -- and possibly win one of three prizes!

It was a tough decision as we had many creative entries, but after a lot of thought and deliberation, the tally is in and we're proud to announce our winners...!

GRAND PRIZE WINNER:

Congratulations to Ray Bailey for creating the winning promotional video for The Walt Disney Family Museum's First Anniversary Video Contest! We absolutely loved the concept and nostalgic tone, and for that, Ray will receive a personal tour (for four) at the Museum, a personalized video editing or animation/claymation class in our Learning Center Media Studio, a Kodak Playsport camera, dinner for two at La Terasse in the Presidio, a dual membership to the Museum, and so much more. Congratulations, Ray!

SECOND PRIZE WINNER

It takes a lot of guts and determination to fill Walt's shoes, but Charlie Wood held his own in his creative video submission. Frankie Fox? Andy Anteater? Genius! Congratulations to Charlie who won free admission and a one-year membership to the Museum, lunch for two at the Cafe, and an autographed copy of our book among other goodies.

THIRD PRIZE WINNER

The Walt Disney Family Museum was created to honor a man--an innovator, movie maker, family man and friend--and this video by Andres Gonzalez does just that. The way he combined text and imagery really showcased the man, the magic and the memories. Congratulations!

HONORABLE MENTION:

The Staff here at the Museum couldn't get enough of this video by Chris Pavlou, but unfortunately we could not count it in our video contest as it features content for which we do not own the copyright. But it was so well made and creative, that we just have to share it with you!

Thank you so much for everyone who participated in our First Anniversary Video Contest. For all the winners, please contact storyboard@wdfmuseum.org to claim your prize by June 2011. Congratulations to all!

One Year Anniversary: Photo Recap!

We'd like to thank everyone who came out for the Anniversary Weekend (Oct 1-3), as well as all our guests who visited the Museum during the month of October! Here are photo highlights of all our celebratory activities!

ROD MILLER - From Main Street U.S.A. to The Walt Disney Family Museum, ragtime jazz pianist Rod Miller entertained the crowds--outside on the porch, and in the Museum's Lobby--throughout the 3-day celebration. He took requests, played classic Disney favorites, including "When You Wish Upon a Star," told behind-the-scenes stories of the happiest place on earth, and even made up a few renditions of his own--including "I Left My Heart in Hawaii (because San Francisco is too cold)!"

RADIO DISNEY - The Anniversary Weekend was packed with activities for guests--young and old--from those who grew up with Frank Sinatra to those who rock out to Hannah Montana! San Francisco's Radio Disney AM1310 visited the Museum with an afternoon full of games, music, prizes, giveaways, and so much more for the kids!

LOOK CLOSER/DISNEY DISCOVERIES - Museum Registrar Anel Muller was on hand on the top of every hour to tell guests all about the Steamboat Willie wall in gallery 2! Did you know there are 348 frames on this wall, which only make up 16 seconds of footage? And that Ub Iwerks (one of Disney's most prominent animators) could sketch up to 700 of these frames a day? Down in the Learning Center, Education Coordinator Ruben Esqueda taught the crowds how to create their own Moviolas. Who said learning couldn't also be fun??

SATURDAY NIGHT SOIREE - For the first time ever, the Museum stayed open late to the public, with a cash bar and live DJ! Visitors also enjoyed a "Where's Walt?" scavenger hunt in the galleries.

The Walt Disney Family Museum Celebrates ONE YEAR!

We are at the end of our first year of operation as a Museum, but it has been more than ten years in gestation, beginning with our collaboration with writers Richard and Katherine Greene, and producers Cathy Labrador and Jean Pierre Isbouts of Pantheon Productions on a CDRom that created our "virtual Museum". Our website carried this on, and queries that the Greenes received about the location of the REAL Museum prompted us to seek a location for the stuff we needed to find a home for: Dad's train, his awards, his miniature collection, etc.  Our first site was in one of the Presidio warehouses on Gorgas Street, not far from our present and permanent location.  Our vision for the Museum grew as we realized that whatever we did in my Dad's name would have to be done in his manner...as well as we could possibly do it.  The story was all-important, but we needed to present it in an entertaining way.  The building was a challenge, but we respected it, as did our designers and architects, and we are proud of the results.

But the most rewarding thing of all is the way it has been accepted by those who have visited.  My goals were that our visitors would leave knowing my dad, inspired by his story, and that the whole experience would be a very pleasant one for them. The word we are getting from the various blogs and reviews indicates that this is happening.

We are especially grateful for the support of our members, who have been enthusiastic about the Museum and supportive of our programs. I want to thank them, and our wonderful staff, who do so much to make the Museum experience a memorable one.

Wow! It's hard to believe that one year has flown by since The Walt Disney Family Museum opened. Over 120,000 guests visited us and 1,500 households joined the larger Museum family by becoming Members. I enjoyed getting to know many of you through our Member's only events and casual encounters in the galleries.

I'm very proud of the hard work that our staff did to present an amazing array of programs, publications, and films. We've had speakers, panels, lectures, puppet shows, and concerts; we've had two exhibitions in our Theater Lobby; we've published a book and four quarterly newsletters; we've also begun a couple of new San Francisco holiday traditions with our exclusive screenings of Hallowscreen! and Christmas with Walt Disney. Two of the highlights for me were our first "Conversations with Legends", when I had the opportunity to have a public chat with Richard Sherman, Rollie Crump, and Blaine Gibson, and our celebration of Disneyland's 55th anniversary, which Marty Sklar organized especially for the Museum.

And, of course, we've worked to ensure that our galleries continue to present the life story of Walt Disney in a way that engages visitors on multiple levels with original animation art, family photographs and home movies, documentary materials, objects from Walt's personal collections, film and television clips, and interactives that are an educational resource for all. It's been a privilege and a great pleasure to help make this Museum a place where all are welcome.
